I’m on a mission this year to read more books and to read widely across fiction and non-fiction genres. (Find me on goodreads here! I’ve read 6 books in January already!)
But if I’m honest, historical fiction always has and always will be my favorite genre to read.
I’m super excited to tell you about this new release from one of my favorite authors, Jocelyn Green. I loved her Heroines Behind the Lines Series based on the true and heroic acts of real women during the Civil War.
Green’s newest release, The Mark of the King takes you into the history of Louisiana’s settlement by the French, and I believe this is Green’s greatest work yet. With great attention to detail, Green takes you into the French colony of New Orleans in the late 1700’s. (Be sure to enter the giveaway below!)
I couldn’t put this book down and thoroughly enjoyed the characters, plot twists, and historical setting of New Orleans. This is a masterful, must-read. (And now I know that while I can stay up late reading and survive on 3 hours of sleep, I’m not as young as I used to be and I really feel it the next day…)
About the book: The Mark of the King (Bethany House, January 2017)
Sweeping historical fiction set at the edge of the continent
After being imprisoned and branded for the death of her client, twenty-five-year-old midwife Julianne Chevalier trades her life sentence for exile to the fledgling 1720s French colony of Louisiana, where she hopes to be reunited with her brother, serving there as a soldier. To make the journey, though, women must be married, and Julianne is forced to wed a fellow convict.
When they arrive in New Orleans, there is no news of Benjamin, Julianne’s brother, and searching for answers proves dangerous. What is behind the mystery, and does military officer Marc-Paul Girard know more than he is letting on?
With her dreams of a new life shattered, Julianne must find her way in this dangerous, rugged land, despite never being able to escape the king’s mark on her shoulder that brands her a criminal beyond redemption.
